Mission
To create meaningful architecture through a research-led process that brings together context, environmental intelligence, material knowledge, technology, art and craft; shaping spaces that respond thoughtfully to both people and place.
Vision
To contribute to a more conscious culture of design where architecture works with natural systems rather than against them; combining contemporary tools with enduring knowledge to create resilient, responsible and culturally relevant environments.
How the studio is put together
MAWA is an umbrella rather than a single signature. Work is led by the person best placed to lead it, and the disciplines gathered around a project change with the site. For now that means project-based collaborations, with a physical production base (models, furniture, prototypes) as the next step.
The name comes from two Japanese ideas: ma, the gap or threshold between things, and wa, the balance that can come of it. The rest of the argument is in the work.
Values
Impact
The studio looks for impact beyond form: using resources more consciously while improving spatial and environmental quality, so that design becomes a way of creating long-term material, cultural and ecological value.
